Jasper's personality is really starting to emerge and what a wonderful dog he is! He will make someone a wonderful pet and companion. He is medium energy, loves to romp and play, but will settle in the house when needed. He loves to wrestle and run with the resident dogs but is also happy to play ball and toy by himself. He has not yet learned that people are also a good source of play. He likes to be in the same room as his person but doesn't need to be “in their space.” He is learning that the couch is a good place for a cuddle and some loving.
When Jasper first came in he was having a significant problem with soiling in his crate. We are continuing to work on the house training issue. He has very recently been moved to Bloomington IL where his new foster home can give him more consistent monitoring. We believe part of the issue is crate stress. He will need a home that is willing to be home with him during his transition as he will need consistency to continue his house training and decrease crate time. He would love a canine playmate as he relies on other dogs for socialization.
Jasper has gotten along well with all that he has met, he has not been cat tested but I can have that done if needed. He is a tall, lanky boy and doesn't always know where his limbs are so would probably do best in a home with children over 10. I cannot even begin to say enough about this wonderful boy with the big soulful eyes.

Jasper was born to be a ranch dog in Oklahoma but since he showed no interest in working the livestock he was taken to the local shelter. On his last day before being euthanized a local rancher pulled him and kept him in her outdoor run until a foster home could be found. He has had a very eventful week. He was flown by a kind pilot to Illinois where he spent 2 nights in Chicago before arriving at his final destination near Ann Arbor, MI. He stands 20 inches at the shoulder and weighs only 27 pounds (yes, he is severely malnourished). He was neutered shortly after arriving and also found to have 2 types of worms (which is probably the reason for his malnourishment). He has received 2 doses of wormer and is already feeling better. He is now on a serious weight gain program. His ideal weight should be somewhere around 40 pounds.
Jasper must have been raised by a heavy hand because he cowers and runs if I raise my voice and/or swing my arms. He has never lived in a house but is learning that people inside the house are nice. We are working on him outside, where he is distrustful of people. He will come with persuasion but is cowering when he gets there. I have been calling him to me and showing him lots of love and kindness and he is beginning to understand. He has not known human kindness and love; on the ranch he was a worker, so he will need a gentle person to heal his bruised soul.
His house training is coming along nicely; he has not lifted his leg in the house in 2 days and his recent neuter will only help that situation. When he came in he was stooling in his crate, but now that the worms are leaving his body and his tummy is feeling better I am already seeing an improvement. He is hungry all the time and will eat off of the counters or table but is quickly learning that is not acceptable. He is in the process of being crate trained; he will sleep in it for short periods but eventually becomes restless and paws and whines at the door. I will continue to work on showing him that his crate is a good, safe place to be.
Jasper’s huge brown eyes seem to say “please let me trust you.” He is a very gentle, very broken soul but I expect to see a new dog emerge over the next few weeks as he learns that the house and people are great things. He loves his squeaky toys and is trying to figure out what to do with a ball. He has been through more in his 1 year of life than any dog should have to go through in a lifetime. He is not quite ready for adoption but should be by the holidays. It is not too early to inquire or apply as it can take a few weeks to complete the application process.

Jasper has arrived to me and is the absolute sweetest soul you could ever meet. He made the long trek from Oklahoma to Michigan and is settling in nicely. He was taken today to be neutered and is sleeping quietly in his crate. He is incredibly thin, he weighed in today at 27 pounds so he is on a path for some serious weight gain (if only I could have the same problem). He had a couple of different worms in his stool so he received his first dose of panacur to help him feel better. His appetite is great so that will help once all those nasty worms quit eating his food. He has the most soulful eyes and just is begging for love. I would guess he would make a great Santa addition to some lucky household. With his looks and temperament I would guess he will be snatched up quickly. Right now he is very mild energy level but I suspect that once he is feeling better a much more active, typical border collie personality is waiting to emerge. I will send pictures once he is feeling better and looking his best.
Jasper is being fostered in Ann Arbor, MI. or more information on Jasper, please contact Kathy at kathyjimmyelyse@hotmail.com.

Jasper is a very sweet natured dog. I took him on a long walk yesterday and he did really good. He is great on a leash. Not like an experienced leash walker, but he does fine. I tried to interest him in playing with some toys, but he isn't showing any interest yet.
