Update on Parvo Pups -- Saturday October 3rd, 2009
[Note: Mick and Zip have been adopted into loving homes!]
As you may know, Come Bye BC Rescue was recently asked to rescue four 4-month old male BC puppies from Missouri within the past couple of months. The puppies were the remainder of a litter of 10 brought into the Lamar, Missouri pound because the breeder “could not get rid of them.” Unfortunately, all 4 were diagnosed with parvovirus, an immune disorder for which puppies are typically vaccinated.
According to Wikipedia, “Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV2, colloquially parvo) is a contagious virus mainly affecting dogs. The disease is highly infectious and is spread from dog to dog by direct or indirect contact with their feces. It can be especially severe in puppies that are not protected by maternal antibodies or vaccination. It has two distinct presentations, a cardiac and intestinal form. The common signs of the intestinal form are severe vomiting and severe hemorrhagic (bloody) diarrhea. The cardiac form causes respiratory or cardiovascular failure in young puppies. Treatment often involves veterinary hospitalization. Vaccines can prevent this infection, but mortality can reach 91% in untreated cases.”
A wonderful person named Wendy was the vital source of the transport, care and recuperation of the puppies during this awful illness which was the direct cause of the loss of life for 2 of the puppies. The remaining 2 puppies have tested negative for parvo and are happy, healthy and are now up for adoption. Photos of all 4 puppies appear in the Photo Gallery in this website.
The Board thanks everyone for their support. This was an emotional struggle for the Board and exhausting for Wendy who daily cleaned and disinfected the areas where the puppies were located so the illness would not spread to other dogs in the area, including her own. Our hats go off to Wendy for all her hard work!

Moving BC's to No-Kill -- Thursday August 6th, 2009
There are many Border Collies waiting to get into rescues. We get frequent calls from owners who need to give up their beloved dogs due to financial situations. Animal Control groups will also contact a breed rescue if they pick up a stray that has not been reclaimed by their owner. These dogs need to be moved from their current situation, but it is not always possible to do so immediately. Rescues only have so many fosters to take in these dogs.
In the meantime, we try to find out as much information about the dogs as possible, including getting an evaluation of the dog so we know of its potential for adoption. Sometimes we can only offer to list a dog on our Courtesy Listing page.
If a dog is at risk for being put down and there are no foster homes available, we will contact a no-kill facility and offer to pay for some of the dog's expenses. We have been successful in moving several dogs in this manner. Thank you for your donations which allow us to do this!
